在摘要、引言、研究方法、研究结果、讨论当中，该使用什么时态，是许多人遇到相当棘手的难题，即使是英文母语者也不一定能够清楚分辨。
写论文时，为了特定目的而使用不一样的时态是常见的。
以下是一般在英文论文跟学位论文中最常被使用的时态说明。因为未来式表现出较高的不确定性，是较少被使用的。
Abstract – 摘要里的时态
摘要使用的动词时态必须根据该文段来做判别。
例: 为了帮助理解问题的介绍文用现在式、对于先前研究作品的参考事项则用现在完成式、方法和结果的说明用过去式。
Introduction – 引言里的时态
Introduction一般来说需要包含被广泛被认知是事实的背景资料，也需要说明本研究的重要性。
如果是提及一般大众所认知的事实时，需要用现在式。在说明特定结果、 Figure或是论文为句子主词时，使用现在式。
例: Imides/amides exhibit excellent chemical, thermal, and photochemical stability of organic semiconductors.
The results of Yang et al. suggests a novel therapy.
在Intro里，现在完成式使用于说明与本研究相关的其他研究时。
例: Yang et al have shown that the drug is effective.
如果需要提及先前其他前人写的论文当中所使用的特定方法时，使用过去式是比较恰当的。
另外，已经不再被当作事实的的叙述文等，需要用过去式。
例: Yang et al observed the results through the SEM.
It was believed that the lac operon was involved in the expression of the gene.
Method – 研究方法里的时态
在Method段落当中，为了说明在研究中做了什么内容，一般是使用简单过去式。
例: The epidural fat was dissected with an RF electrode.
如果有图片或图表来辅助说明研究内容，在论文内容里提及图片或图表时，则使用现在式。
例: Figure 2 below shows the expression level of the AB gene.
Results – 研究结果里的时态
在Results段落中，请使用过去式仔细说明研究结果。
例: Overall, the expression of the AB gene had a positive correlation with the insertion of the XY gene.
提及图片、表格及图像时，使用现在式。
例: Figure 1 displays the fast interlock interface signal flow.
Discussion – 讨论里的时态
为了说明结果的重要性，使用现在式。
例:Suppression of the AB gene appears to negatively affect the expression of XY gene.
另外，作者可以使用现在式说明或解析结论的意义的同时，也为了强调研究结果而使用过去式。
例: As the expression of the gene AB did not correlated with the expression of XY gene, it is possible that the gene AB may not be involved in the mechanism.
