The UC schools do not consider ACT and SAT scores in their admission decisions. You will record your scores for AP exams, IB exams, TOEFL or IELTS, and International exams. Proficiency in English is essential for successful admissions at UC Berkeley. If you are an international student, you can demonstrate your proficiency with one of these exams – Duolingo English Test (DET) (minimum score of 115), IELTS (minimum score of 6.5), and TOEFL (minimum score of 80).

Personal Insight Questions · 个人洞察力问题
There are eight essay prompts (which the UC application calls “personal insight questions”), where you need to answer four out of eight questions. You only have 350 words to answer each question. When considering your answers, admissions officers will look for evidence of initiative, service to others, leadership, cultural engagement, persistence, motivation, and special potential. Achievement is considered within the context of the opportunities available to the applicant. When discussing hardships, write about how you have confronted and overcome them and reflect on how you have learned from obstacles to highlight the character traits that UC Berkeley wants on their campus. It’s important to be aware that if you apply to more than one UC school, they are not able to submit different PIQs (Personal insight questions) to different campuses.
